How can the Nudj community help tackle food and water shortages?
If you’re anything like us, the recent UK heatwaves have been a bit of a wake-up call to the very real effects of global warming. With official declarations of drought announced across the country and hosepipe-ban warnings on primetime news, climate change is feeling like a part of our daily lives- perhaps for the first time. We’re seeing our lakes and reservoirs run low, wildfires break out, and food crops fail. But for many around the world food and water shortages are a daily battle, and while we may have all seen it on the news, sometimes it takes a closer-to- home wake-up call to help us truly understand the gravity of a situation.
Action Against Hunger estimate that there are as many as 811 million people living in hunger today*- and that due to COVID-19, conflict, and climate change, that number is likely to rise. At Nudj we’re all about taking action- so we asked ourselves, what can our brilliant community do to help?
Among others, there are two ways you can make a difference- and as always, Nudj is here to help.
Reduce food waste
The first step towards a fairer food world is to look at our own eating habits- and we can all agree that it’s desperately sad to think of food going to waste while so many go hungry in the world. By shopping more mindfully and planning ahead we can avoid food waste and in turn reduce our carbon footprint.
Schemes such as Olio** are great to get involved in if you find yourself with leftovers going spare, and as always we’re here to gently Nudj you towards your sustainability goals- the ‘Buy Smaller Products’ challenge is a perfect place to start working on your waste reduction. Join in now on the Nudj app.
Watch your water consumption
It seems obvious to reduce our water consumption while the world is heating up with the impact of global warming. Let’s start with our daily shower. Did you know that the average shower time in the UK is eight minutes- and that shaving just three minutes off this time could save a kilogram of carbon every week? And make sure you turn the tap off whilst brushing your teeth!
Join in with the ‘Race to Rinse’ challenge on the Nudj app and take a simple step towards a more sustainable lifestyle. If you completed the challenge every day for a year, you could also save yourself up to an estimated £45 on your household bills, too!
Seeing what’s going on in the world can make us feel helpless- but at Nudj we believe that every little action adds to change that can make a difference on a global scale. Challenge yourself this week and start building sustainable habits. Download the app on iOS Apple or Android today.
