Creating A Sustainable Future With Co-op

Like Nudj, Co-op understand the importance of teamwork when it comes to creating a more sustainable future for all. They have been very vocal about their intentions and have put in place measures that highlight doing the right thing by both the people and the planet.

Nudj has been working with Co-op to deliver a survey to members to better understand their views towards sustainable practices, and how we both can work collaboratively to better help others.

Co-op have a membership programme that provides change, as every £1 spent on selected products and services, 2p goes back to the member and the same to support community organisations and local causes.

You can become a Co-op Member here, and help make a difference in the world.

Co-op’s Sustainability Goals

Their sustainability practices are broken down into four subcategories: Climate Commitments, Environmental Impact, Responsible Sourcing and Ethical Trading.

Climate Commitments

Chief Executive Jo Whitfield said “We are facing monumental climate change. Let’s be bold and take collective action to tackle climate change.” Following this, Co-op aim to be a Net Zero business by 2040, which includes investing in the operations processes to reduce their carbon footprint - a goal Nudj align themselves with.

Environmental Impact

Reducing the impact Co-op have on the environment is paramount to them. Beginning with their packaging and recycling - where plastic alternatives are used as much as possible, but when they cannot, they ensure it is easy to recycle. Also, to reduce food waste, a rising issue in the UK, Co-op have worked with partners such as FareShare to ensure food is not being wasted but given directly to community groups.

Responsible Sourcing

Co-op have invested heavily in prioritising the use of responsible, ethical and sustainable sourcing for their products. This includes opting for pole-and-line fishing for their aquaculture products, working with quality assurance schemes like Red Tractor for their livestock, and preferring FairTrade practices for their forest & peatland ingredients.

Ethical Trading

Working closely with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Co-op have established themselves as a company that truly trades ethically. Championing proactivity, ownership and partnership with their suppliers gives everybody the transparency and ownership to deliver long-term sustainable change.
