4 Steps for Businesses to Tackle the Energy Crisis

As the UK energy and cost of living crises continue, 77% of organisations say energy is now their biggest business risk (Npower, 2022). How can you empower your employees to make climate- positive changes that will save energy, money, and improve your organisations sustainable impact? Follow this 4-step guide for simple, effective, and sustainable ways to tackle the energy crisis and save up to 800 kilos* of carbon a week within your office.

Step 2: Power down your computer

Did you know that on just one office floor of 600 people, powering down monitors and desktops instead of placing them into power save mode, can save up to 23 tonnes of carbon emissions over the course of a year. This is the equivalent of the entire annual carbon emissions of more than 3 people! Not to mention lower energy bills! Computer monitors, laptops and other electronic devices use energy even when they’re in sleep mode. So, if you don’t need your computer for anything significant, turn it off. It will save money, energy, and keep the planet a tiny bit greener.

Step 3: Switch off your lights

Electricity generation is responsible for about 30% of all carbon emissions in the UK (POST 2007). Switching off your lights is the easiest way to save energy, carbon, and money on your electricity bill. For example, if an office floor of 600 people switched off their lights for 1 day, they would save 24.95 kgs of carbon. Most often, you don’t need all your lights for every activity—and if you do, try using LED light bulbs instead of keeping them on all day long.

Step 4: Turn the thermostat down by 1 degree

Turning down your heating is one of the top energy saving tips according to the Department for Energy and Climate Change. It may not sound like much but lowering the thermostat by one degree is the equivalent of switching off 15 light bulbs. If just one office floor of 600 employees made this small shift for the year, they can save over 3 tonnes of carbon from entering our atmosphere while also saving your business up to 10% a year on energy bills. This is the equivalent amount of carbon as an economy flight from London (LHR) to San Francisco (SFO) and back (The Guardian, n.d).

Imagine the financial, carbon and energy savings your business could have if you implemented these 4 steps into your workplace for a year!
